Stake President Job Description

Dear Stake President,

Background

Your stake has been given the opportunity to participate in a pilot program to increase the educational attainment of members. Educational deficiencies are putting many members in harm’s way and also increasing the workload of bishops and stake presidents. Consider the proportion of a bishop’s load due to unemployment, underemployment, single moms, dysfunctional families, young adult behavioral problems, high school dropouts, and the third of college attendees that dropout before acquiring saleable skills. Success in school could eliminate most of these problems. That’s half the need. The other half is more far reaching in its contribution to family life and individual development. It is to help members fulfill the modern educational mandate to equip and prepare for greater service so that the Church and each member can fulfill their destiny.

The Yount program is designed to operate through priesthood channels and welfare-related councils. It necessitates the calling of stake and ward Educational Advancements Specialists to assist and support individual educational progress. A special seminar has been prepared to help members successfully engage in educational advancement and meet the related challenges. Yount Headquarters provides stake specialists and seminar instructors with the necessary training.

Financial aid is available for needy, worthy members (age 18-40) who cannot otherwise arrange financial assistance.

The Yount Seminar covers:

  1. Early preparation for college,
  2. How to transition into college,
  3. How to pay for college, and
  4. How to succeed in college once there.

Additional information for you can be found on the www.yountprogram.org website.

Stake President Duty

As stake president, your primary duty is to establish a climate and expectation of educational advancement for all members in your stake.  Under your direction your educational advancement specialist will brief your stake and ward councils on how to organize and proceed.

Your only other duty is to sign Yount Loan applications signifying financial need and worthiness.  Loan applicants are to utilize all other financial aid resources open to them before applying for a Yount Loan. Families that can afford out of state tuition and room and board away from home generally would not qualify unless there are special reasons for doing so. In that case a special letter from the bishop or stake president would need to accompany the application.

Please note that the mini grant option has been discontinued for 2010.
